Hazid, Hazan and Hazop are all part of Safety and Risk Management. Hazard, Hazid (hazard identification), Hazan (hazard analysis), and Hazop (hazard and operability studies) are important safety and risk management techniques which can be applied in any industry to address, reduce or eliminate hazards.

  • HAZAN

HAZAN represents hazard analysis. It considers system state (e.g. operating environment) as well as failures or malfunctions. It involves identifying the undesired events that lead to the occurrence of hazard, the analysis of the mechanisms by which the undesired events could occur, and the estimation of the consequences. It is the application of numerical methods to obtain an understanding of hazards in terms of:

  • How often a hazard will manifest itself,
  • And the consequences for people, process and plant.

It is referred as the prerequisite for the complete risk assessment process, which involves first analyzing the hazards and then go on to assess the risks they present and determining what, if any, control measures should be taken.

  • HAZOP

HAZOP stands for hazard and operability (Hazop). It is designed to review hazard identification, and the identification of deficiencies in design which may lead to operability problems. It identifies irregularities in the working environment, enabling the root causes of the abnormalities to be pinpointed. It is associated with comprehensive and complex workplace operations, which, if malfunctions or irregularities were to occur, could lead to significant loss, in terms of injury or life.

  • HAZID

HAZID is hazard Identification. HAZID study is the systematic method of identifying hazards with the goal of preventing and/or reducing any adverse impact that it could lead to, either in terms of injury to personnel, damage or loss of property, environment and production. It can be used to determine the adverse effects of exposure to hazards and to plan necessary actions to mitigate such risks. It is generally a risk analysis tool developed to alert management to threats and hazards as early as possible during process operations. The classification is made on the basis of probability and consequences. The study provides a qualitative analysis of a work environment in order to determine its worker safety risk level.
